Upholstery question

Post by 46 deluxe »

A question for the guys on here that have had a crack at their own upholstery .
What type of sewing machines have you used ?
I'm thinking of having a crack at upholstery myself , and not sure what's a good machine to get , so any tips ?

The "walking foot" appears to be one feature I have heard regularly as a requirement Scott. Mustang upholstery is easy, all you need is hog ring pliers and a box of hog rings, someone else has made the covers. :D

Late to the party but this is the one I have. One thing I learned was having prewound bobbins for under the sewing deck. The machine does have the ability to wind them, but I never had any luck with them working well.

I ended up with a consew 226R-2
Came with extra feet for doing piping , as the previous owner was an upholsterer .

Yep that's what i reckon Frank , no harm in trying .
And if i don't do any good i should make a profit on my machine as it was bought at a good price . :D

Biggest challenge I reckon would be getting the lines straight if doing pleats. "dressmakers chalk" ? . We re upholstered the buckets in the 66 Mustang Coupe ,and the front split bench in the convertible. Easy because they were kits. All we had to do was get a box of hog ring clips and a set of hog ring pliers. Did both on hottish days and after a brief time leaving the covers out in the sun. Made it easier to stretch into place.

As an ex trimmer I would suggest chinagraph pencil for marking out as it doesn't rub off (on vinyl or leather) just clean with turps when finished. Walking foot machine will make it easier to sew through foam and thicker areas.Consew 226r I think have compound feed (needle feeds with walking foot) which is better than just walking foot in my experience

Watching with interest! I used to be able to sew (a very long time ago) but only fabric stuff.
Yeah. I've changed my signature. The old one was out of date...
