54 Hudson coupe

Post by hudson nut »

Well, I rearranged the shop (shed) and will be pulling the front end out of the jag soon, to put under my 54, so I thought I would start a journal here of the build, so I can share all my mistakes and screw-ups with the world. A friend is going to give me some hands-on training to teach me how to post photos.

I just read that post.... That was a long-arse sentence. I'll have to use more punctuation.

That'll be a cool looking car when it's done. What powertrain will it be running? Pics look good. P.S. Bit of shed envy.

Engine will be a big block Ford with a E4OD, and 8.8" Ford rear with 3.55 LSD.

It looks like a good project so thank you for sharing.

We all make enough mistakes to teach each other how to do things right so don't hold back on the good as well :D

I ordered and received my upper shock mounts from Top Rods (thank you Peter). I’m getting everything cleaned up and painted and ready for reassembly. I noticed, when mocking up the shock mounts, that if I line up the inner edge of the upper bracket, with the inner edge of the lower bracket, the upper bracket is not centered on the crossmember. (It’s off center about 1/4”) My gut says center it and let the rubber mounts on the shocks take care of the misalignment... What do you advise?

Hey Dany, if you look at page 4 of my build, it shows the brackets and the KYB shocks that suit.

I had the same issue, I tacked the 3 pieces together then mounted the new shocks with the suspension at the "loaded height" and allowed the mountings to settle in their natural position. I then checked for clearance through the full suspension travel range, then tacked them in after a little re-adjustment. I did this after renewing the bushes in the upper and lower control arms and without the springs in of course.

Thanks Newbee. I went back and looked at your build photos, and bought the shocks on my way home from work. I will be centering the shocks within the upper control arm, and welding the brackets accordingly.
