Trying to identify this 1930 era sedan.

Post by Gojeep »

Been asking in groups but can't seem to nail down what this vehicle in the foreground might be?

Image

Got Dodge like guards and looks a bit like a Pontiac in the A pillar, but can't find anything that matches that simple beltline top and bottom of the door and has the spare wheel mounted on the side of the cowl as well.
That is not a fuel filler on the cowl either but an old piston and the rear guard in the engine bay may not even be off this.

Got the identification and turns out to be a Australian 1930 Chrysler 77 Sedan.

A few likely projects there 8) Rarely any bargains at auctions though as people tend to go nutty.
If it has tits or wheels, you can expect trouble.

Marcus, I'm not sure... The cowl vent is on top of the cowl on the first car, and it looks like the restored one has the vents near the bottom, on the side of the cowl. Also, the front fenders are very different in shape along the front edge as well as being made of two pieces, with an exposed seam. I love the louvers on the hood of the restored car.

Someone found a matching photo of the dash and it looks the same as a 1929 Hupmobile.

One for auction.

Nailed it!
Now if it was a bit more complete, that would be a nice buy.

To add to your diagnosis, also see the roof line at the back. The Chrysler had the smaller canvas top with the sides of the roof being steel.
The Hup had the roof canvas coming right down to the drip rails.

Yeah. I've changed my signature. The old one was out of date...

Have to agree with that. Some get carried away in the mass frenzy and end up with prices above what can be found from a single advertised sale for similar vehicle elsewhere. I did go for a sticky beak once though, at an auction held in a backyard marquee in a well heeled suburb, it was mainly art and fine furniture. Two vehicles, One a twin spinner another was a 48-215 Holden, and a couple of other vehicles were there. The vehicles were listed in the fine print, and as a result missed by the larger car fraternity. The folks attending were "fine art types". The vehicles for the majority were just passing curiosity. The very few car folks bidding ended up with bargains.

Grandad had a Hupmobile tourer but it was much older than that one, the handbrake and gear shifter was out on the right running board
