Alfarod re-engine update

As some of you may remember I purchased a 2.5L V6 late last year to replace the 4 banger in the alfarod.

Progress has been slow of late due to a long term project at work but now that that's over I can back to some more important things.

So here it's goodbye to the faithful old 4 banger, a nice old gal but she lacked that growl you need in a hotrod.

And in goes the V6, well the block and heads to check for clearances.

Nice tight 60 deg V will ensure theres plenty of room on the sides

So far it seems to fit rather well with at least 2 inches of room to the underside of the bonnet.

But there are a few problems.
Exits from the stock exhaust manifolds foul on the front K members. I may have to scallop them or fabricated new manifolds.
I'll have to make up some new engine mounts or fabricate adapter plates.
And the steering shaft will need a dog leg, which is often the case with V engined rods.

Great choice of engine Brett.

Those rocker covers look very nice! :)

Tell ya what would look good and keep others scratching their heads, machine the ALFA ROMEO out of the valve covers, and get LIL' HEMI or something similar put in there. :lol:

Whats the planned date for completion Brett?

These covers are just a stop gap, which is why I've painted them rather than going to all the bother of polishing.
What I eventually want is a set of covers from the early GTV6 which are all plain except for a small alfa romeo script. These look awesome all polished up and with the script ground off even better. I have the earlier, plainer intake plenum which also looks good polished.

looking good Brett , that v6 engine is a great looking engine as is but with the covers you intend to use it will look even better well done Troy 8) :)

I was building a track roadster in the late 70's with a 1600 Alfa engine, had the "Alfa Romeo" script machined off and Offenhauser machined onto the cam covers..........lol.......really pissed a few people off......and brought a smile to my dial also........love the new Alfa engine setup..they are a pain to mount up as nothing is symetrical..........andyd

I remember seeing an alfa powered track roadster in a rod magazine from the late 70s or early 80s. It was unfinished and was displayed at a rod show, probably the Sydney show. An Odd Rods member told me that it was written off being trailered home.
Was that your car Andy? I've been trying to track down some info in for quite a while.

You're not wrong there mate. It looks like I'll have to make new engine mounting brackets to take out the offset.
The rear mount is offset too, however I've discovered that the one from my 4 banger isn't and they look to be interchangeable.
All in a days work for a hotrodder.

Brett......yep that was it, theres a pic in the 1978 Odd Rods Wollongong Show coverage in the April 1979 , # 9 issue of Australian Street Rodding, page 26........my brother had his red & silver rolled panned 51 Chev custom there and I had the unfinished Track Roadster on a trailer sitting behind the chev with a Bonneville Salt Flats painted backdrop........the track roadster used a Bob Bowman T Bucket chassis, Alfa Guila Sprint GT engine & gearbox, new P76 Borg Warner diff on Spax shocks, with a 4bar & panhard rod, front end was a Bowman tube axle, new 48 Ford stubs, P76 discs & calipers, HQ steering box mounted on an angle behind the spring perch with a custom broached dogbone shaped pitman arm that had a short steering going from each dogbone ear to the rear steering boss on the stub axles(the Oz drivers side stub axle had an extra tie rod end boss forged onto its end so it mirrored the Oz passenger side steering arm with a pair of eyes, this was to allow the tie rods to mount on the rearmost eye for a better steering geometry). The engine/gearbox was mounted using 186 Holden engine mounts on the engine and a modified alfa mount at the rear of the box. A P76 booster & master cylinder was mounted under the floor. The body for the show was just a floppy shell with a turtle deck, a Track Roadster glass nose from AI Fibreglass in the USA was imported by Diablo Motors in Sydney for me an was temporarily mounted for the show(this nose was copied by meDonald Bros in melbourne and subsequently copies were use on other Oz track roadsters incl the ASRF Raffle car). After the show I mounted the floor and exhaust on the car which was a single truck 6-7" diameter exhaust pipe turnout with a large muffler inside, the Alfa cast Iron headers fed into a collector that fed the side mounted pipe.........what happened to the car?.........it was NOT destroyed in an accident......I had my 1940 Dodge which I was still sorting out(and still am..........I'm a slow learner.....lol) so that was taking up some time and the Track Roadster was put on the back burner........in about 1981 I decided to sell it unfinished, basically as is seen in the show pic........I got a few inquiries but no one wanted a 4 cylinder powered t bucket.......a what?......lol.......so I advertised the engine & gearbox, which was a going concern and sold it for about $500.00........and then sold the rolling chassis/body etc to a guy in the Sydney suburb of Auburn and delivered it to him.........I have no idea who he was, nor has anyone I have spoken to over the years ever recollected seeing a T bucket chassis with a very unusual steering setup...........I have always wondered about redoing it again but this time with the Alfa transaxle in the rear tho' not with the DeDion suspension.........just having the bottom of the transaxle poking thru an alloy belly pan would be an interesting rear look...........lol..........shit I rave on.......lol............but its nice to have someone remember what was one of the first attempts at a Track Roadster here in oz......if you get a copy of the magazine article, it shows the car on display with a magazine taped on the side of the body.......this was the US Rod & Custom magazine article on the V6 powered Tom Prufer black & flamed, wire wheeled Track Roadster that just blew me away & inspired the build........very few people or even rodders knew what the hell I was building.......lol........regards, Andy Douglas

I loved the look of that car first time I saw it in the mag, and always wondered what became of it. Glad to hear she wasn't totaled but sorry to hear she was never finished.

But no mind, it was an inspiration for me, along with several other 4 banger rods of that time.

You know, I've been wondering what to do with the old 4 banger. I was going to sell it but they're not worth much these days.
I do have an A chassis, tojo 5 speed and L300 diff lying around.
I might just build something like your track roadster.

Stock:
2.5 12V 160hp
3.0 12V 185hp
2.5 24V 190hp
3.0 24V 220hp
3.2 24V 240hp

I'm using the 2.5 12V because they are cheap and plentiful and won't over tax the 4 cylinder transmission, brakes, etc.
Anything bigger and it becomes a major and very expensive rebuild.

But at just 900kg and with a 4.1 rear ratio it should get up and go pretty good.
