Hopped up Hudson Hornet build.
I’m sidetracked again… building an engine for a club member. This one is getting the 50’s NASCAR upgrades. 2” intake valves, 1.6875 exhaust valves, and a big block relief.

Here is the block, set up on my mill, and photos comparing the factory relief with the new relief. The new one is .100” deeper than factory.

Forced induction? Just wondering as the compression would have dropped as well I take it? Or do the pistons have to deep first ring land and come up higher? I know little about hopping up flat heads and was wondering how you over came the greater chamber area?

I use a head with a smaller combustion chamber. Stock compression was 7.5:1. after block modifications, with the other head, compression is 8.75:1. The relief is 1/16" above the top piston ring, valves unshrouded. This, coupled with a good camshaft, really makes it breathe good.
