Got good information by a few people who have used it in the past, thanks Mudgy, and said it is worth putting their top coat on everything, even if not seeing direct sunlight. KBS claim better UV resistance than their competitors, ie. POR-15, but it is not worth the risking it.

Plus one for the KBS coating. I used it for the Chev chassis. Looks "factory" (sort of...) but it's tough as nails. I can walk on the chassis and don't leave marks. It's been on for a few years.
I used a brush (well several, not worth cleaning them) and I was pleased with the result.

Yeah. I've changed my signature. The old one was out of date...

Great to hear.
Did you top coat it as well?

Re: Grand Willys Project
Great results so far Marcus - excellent to see. Looks like the roller is a clear winner.
I've played around a little bit with some of the KBS paint too (primarily Rust Seal) - and have always noted their warning that is only has a moderate level of UV stability. Their advice is "RustSeal can be top-coated with any topcoat system you choose for a bright, lasting shine finish".
Am I right in saying that this essentially means they're saying to go and use a different product all together for top coat (non-KBS)? I've always found this strange.... it's their ultimate "3 stage process" - but it should really be a 4 stage process. Do KBS sell a top-coat at all?

Re: Grand Willys Project
G'day Brett. Their top coat comes with the chassis kit I bought and is also a moisture cure and doesn't need a hardener. They actually said it wasn't really needed in my application as none of it is in direct sunlight apart from when I have the bonnet up at a car show. Then the top of the suspension towers would see UV light. Obviously you don't want the cassis exposed for a long time while building it either, but don't plan on that.
Their top coat I tried to roll as well, but because it was satin and not gloss, it didn't work out as well as I would have liked and they warned me about that too! Thought it might be ok if I used the roller, but I didn't like how flat the sheen was compared to the their Rustseal satin.

Re: Grand Willys Project
So is their top coat what they call "BlackTop"? If so, is this a case of having any colour you like, as long as it's black?
I did the outside of a long range fuel tank in their silver Rust Seal. Fantastic finish. Will be interesting to see how it lasts. Even though it's underneath the car, it'll still cop some level of UV.
How are the guys down at Donburn progressing? Have you dropped in at all for a sticky beak on progress with the cab?

Just noticed the blacktop is not part of the kit but ordered separately. The only colour it comes in.LXCHEV wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 8:55 pm So is their top coat what they call "BlackTop"? If so, is this a case of having any colour you like, as long as it's black?

Donburn send out progress photos at the end of each month so I got some a few weeks ago. They have only just started on it and did adhesion testing to make sure the lanolin and Ankor Wax didn't affect the paint at all. Came through no problems at all so they are happy to proceed and have started on the doors and doing the rest of the panels this month they hope. Everything is going in Restofinish epoxy before any further work will be done.

Re: Grand Willys Project
I used POR15, which is essentially the same as KBS.
I painted the rear braces for the roll cage with it then overcoated it with a satin black enemal.
The enamel is/has fallen off as it doesn't stick to the base but the base is still gloss and that's after 11 years. I know it isn't left out in the sun but it's holding up very well so I'd expect your base to hold up just like mine has.

Re: Grand Willys Project
Once POR15 sets up, you have to sand it dull before anything will stick to it. Even more POR15

Re: Grand Willys Project
It's disappointing To put in the work that you think is the best and have it fall over.
Will you have to remove the blue paint from the RHS to paint it with KBS or Eastwood's paint?
