56 F100 IFS Questions

Post by LloydT »

G’day everyone, new to posting to the forum but I have read a lot of great stuff.
I have just purchased a 1956 F100 RHD. I am contemplating the front end of it. I have a 96 XH front which I have seen has been installed on a few other F100’s but I am concerned with sump clearance on the k frame. I am also contemplating a jag IFS. I have seen both XJS and a XJ6 for sale.
Questions:
1. Which would be easier to install/engineer?
2. Which is likely to give a better ride etc(I assume the jag)
3. Is there any difference in fitting an XJS vs XJ6 I am aware the XJS will have heavy duty springs

100% go with the jag , don't even think of using the falcon f/end .
Any engineer will be happy with the jag unit as it has been done so many times .
And you can probably have the jag unit fitted in a weekend .

Thanks Scott, I reckon you are right.
Is there any difference XJS vs XJ6 that I need to be aware of?

Only difference would be springs and possibly sway bar . .

Definitely the Jag. Go for Series11 or Series 111 XJ6 with 4 spot calipers and vented discs. No hassles with power steer as they have power racks I have fitted one into our 49 F1 pickup easy as if made for it. Used stock rubber mounting and the vehicle being LHD I was lucky to get an LHD rack. Stock sway bar mounts also fitted up. Rubber mounted will require that weird Jag intermediate shaft with the collapsible uni to absorb fe movement to the column. A tip. Early 2000,s Mazda Bravo /Ford Courier use a splined collapsing intermediate shaft, this gives you some nice leeway for your column connection when it comes to the rack. Only one hassle I encountered. Going for full rego the engineer after first inspection wanted the brake hoses to be marked as ADR compliant. WTF? They were stock hoses off an Australian registered Jag ,and even if new replacements would be the same. I got Pirtek to make replacements. The hose has writing on it with numbers to make everyone happy. He got me for 5 items including the hoses. I already had a compliant new laminated stamped screen. Back and door window glass to be replaced/ stamped. and some lighting issues. Rear indicators to be ADR compliant as was my front parkers. And my shift linkages to be made safer.

People are constantly asking questions on Jag IFS or the Jag independent rears.
For something discussed so often, why isnt this topic listed in the Tech Knowledge Base? :?:

Good question Steve. The front ends are straightforward with stock mounts I do know on early Chevs Fords. I could not believe how simple. The rear certainly needs discussion as this can commonly be screwed up when folks mount different radius arms to the JAG rear control arms. I did find many years back that under a 38 Chev chassis having not only the rails spaced apart conveniently to use the stock rubber vee mounts, the stock forward facing radius arms could be used . These are attached to the jag floor via "hats" under the floor. Those "hats" were and possibly still are available as a rust repair item . Only issue with the f/e is the shocks. On Jags the upper mount is the body. Fabricated brackets welded to the top of the shock tower and VW shocks fix that.
